The Problem with Bluffing or Pretending to Hear What Was Said to You

I always tell my students to try to never bluff. It is usually not a good idea to pretend you heard what was said to you. I have had too many bad and awkward experiences due to my bluffing. I'll share one embarrassing experience:

Stranger at a party: "I would uhhjs js lksjhhsgg your fohjyd. Would you mind?"

Me: "Sure. Yeah, whatever."

Suddenly, he stooped down and started to take off my shoes. Alarmed, I asked him what he was doing.

Smiling up at me, he responded, "You said that you would not mind it if I rub your feet."

Yikes! Awkward!

I excused myself, quietly got up, put my shoes back on, and ran away as far as I could.

Oops.
