I have had my hearing aid since 2006. I think it is time for a new one; something sleeker with better sound quality. I like the idea of having something lighter and more comfortable hanging on my ear.
But, I don't want to go through the process of shopping around for a hearing aid, trying it out, and visiting audiologists and hearing aid dispensers eager to sell me expensive hearing aids. I don't want to listen to someone telling me that I could try two hearing aids or that perhaps I could look into getting a cochlear implant for my left ear. I don't want to hear about how I could benefit from auditory verbal therapy and speech therapy. I just want to know which hearing aid would be the best for my right ear.
I can't seem to bring myself to check out hearing aid reviews online, to visit different places selling hearing aids, and to deal with different people selling me hearing aids they are sometimes pushed to sell in order to make extra money. How do I sort out the competent hearing aid sellers from the incompetent ones? How will I know that I am properly fitted?
The other day, I thought about the daunting task of visiting more hearing aid providers to shop around. The idea of doing this made me feel tired.
However, I told myself that I must do it. I would be such a hypocrite when I am always encouraging my students to try doing something difficult if they know it may benefit them, while I sit here and whine about how I don't want to get a new hearing aid and do nothing about it. Getting a new hearing aid could be the best thing in the world for me right now. I got to at least try.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised how much hearing aid technology has advanced since 2006, in size, aesthetics and the bottom line, actually being able to hear better. As a for instance, I have a friend who is very profoundly deaf in both ears and has worn NHS issue Siemens aids for many years, but when she managed to get upgraded to Phonak Niadas she was amazed how much better, and more importantly clearer she hears.
